Dreams come true

When Letting Go Gives You More Than You Hoped For

October 22, 20252 min read

We only discovered this dream of my mom’s because of one passing moment. She and my husband were sitting together when a yellow Mustang drove by. She smiled, laughed, and said, “I would look so HOT in that car!”

Turns out, this wasn’t just a playful comment—it was a dream she’d been holding since her teenage years. That little spark became the inspiration for her 80th birthday surprise.

My sister and I wanted more than anything to make it real. But we promised each other: no forcing it. If the right car didn’t show up, we’d let it go.

We tried everything. Followed leads. Explored alternatives. But nothing felt right. Finally, we had to let it go—and that was painful. Then came the twist: Mom accidentally saw a text message that said, “the yellow car fell through.” We had to tell her what we’d been trying to do and admit we hadn’t pulled it off.

I expected disappointment. Instead, she surprised us with pure joy. Just knowing her dream had been heard and honored was enough. She felt loved beyond measure—even without the car.

And then, the moment we stopped pushing, Grace stepped in. A nephew connected us with someone nearby who owned a yellow Mustang and was happy to help. Before long, Mom was behind the wheel of her teenage dream.

The lesson? Sometimes the outcome isn’t the biggest gift. It’s the love and connection that comes from being heard. And often, when we stop gripping so tightly, life finds a way to deliver more than we ever could have planned.

For those of you who give so much of yourselves to others, here’s an invitation:
Write down the moments—big or small—where life has worked out in your favor, even when it first looked impossible. Let those stories remind you that you are supported, too.
